In general, no, because effective and safe treatments are available from your physician. But if your blood pressure is very high (systolic 180 mmHg or more or diastolic 120 mmHg or more) this is called a Hypertensive Crisis and requires urgent medical care. It can affect both women and men but is more likely in older women with long-standing or poorly controlled high blood pressure. This serious condition affects approximately 1-2% of people with hypertension, and in the United States there are an estimated 500,000 cases each year.
